New Delhi:

Top leaders from the Congress, Janata Dal (United), and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) met in Delhi today to forge a united Opposition front ahead of the 2024 general election. They discussed the potential of taking on the governing BJP as a single force.

Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar and the leader of the JDU, Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar and the head of the RJD, all attended the meeting. In the meeting were also JDU President Rajiv Ranjan Singh, RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Kumar Jha, and Congress leader Salman Khursheed.

A Significant Move to Unify the Opposition

Speaking to the media, Mr. Kharge claimed that the gathering was "historic" and that the goal was to bring the opposition groups together for the approaching elections. A "historic move," according to Mr. Gandhi, had been taken to bring together the opposition parties. The Opposition's vision for the nation would be developed through a process, he added.

The objective, according to the Chief Minister of Bihar, who is in Delhi, is to get as many parties together and cooperate. Before the meeting, Mr. Kumar visited RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is recuperating at the home of his daughter Misa Bharti. The Congress president tweeted from his official handle that the Opposition leaders had pledged to raise the people's voices and provide new direction to the country. "We will protect the Constitution and save the country," he tweeted in Hindi. Mr. Kharge has also spoken to DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier.

As the Lok Sabha election of 2024 approaches, opposition parties are investigating novel strategies to challenge the BJP, which is now in power. Yet, although some parties have made it plain where they stand on whether or not to join a front, others have sent contradictory messages.

For instance, the Trinamool Congress initially declared that it would run unopposed in the Lok Sabha elections. Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the party and the chief minister of Bengal, made the comment following a defeat in a by-election. The Trinamool had claimed that an agreement between the Left, the Congress, and the BJP was to blame for the setback.

But, after Rahul Gandhi was found guilty of criminal defamation for his comment about the "Modi surname," the party seemed to be reversing course. Immediately after, Ms. Banerjee urged the opposition parties to band together and depose the BJP. A fire broke out in the “city village” in Gangnam District, Seoul in the early morning, and at least 15 houses were burned down

The Aam Aadmi Party is another significant opposition force that has not yet said clearly how it feels about joining any front (AAP). The party, which is in charge in Delhi and Punjab, just attained national status. Party leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated last month that the importance of people's unity, not that of the opposition, was made clear to the media. He said that people dislike it when parties claim to have worked together to beat a rival.
